Champaran district in Bihar has the privilege that Mahatma Gandhi returned from South Africa and started the Satyagraha movement. Gandhiji was also successful in Champaran Satyagraha. In Champaran, the British opened several factories to manufacture indigo. The British seized most of Champaran's land and built their own chamber on it. These British used to force the farmers here to cultivate indigo. Then Mahatma Gandhi started the Satyagraha movement. This instilled confidence in the farmers of Champaran and introduced a new power to fight injustice. Champaran Satyagraha was India's first non-violent successful movement.
