According to Bhavishpuran, during the Sagar Manthan, the Nagas did not listen to their mother, due to which they got cursed. The serpents were told that they would be burnt in the Yagya of Janamejaya. The bewildered Nag reached Brahmaji's shelter and started asking him for help. Then Brahmaji said that in the Naga dynasty, the believer, son of Mahatma Zartaru, will protect all the serpents. Brahmaji had told this remedy only on Panchami Tithi. At the same time, the believer sage saved the snakes from burning in the yajna on the fifth day of the month of Savan. He saved milk by putting milk on the snakes. At that time, the sage had said that whoever worships the serpents on Panchami Tithi will not have any fear of Nagdansh.
