The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide. The conference is named after the Iranian city of Ramsar, which is located on the Caspian Sea. The treaty was signed here in February 1971. It is officially known as Wetlands on International Importance, specifically as the Water flow Habitat, and more recently as the Convention of Wetlands. It came into force in 1975 and a few days later came into force in India. Currently, there are more than 40 Ramsar sites in India in addition to the latest from Ladakh.
