The Patna Kalam style originated under British patronage by coincidence with the British style. During the decline of the Mughal Empire, due to the lack of support to artists in the royal court, their migration began in other areas. In the same sequence, circa 1760, the fledgling painter returned to the then capital 'Pataliputra'. These migrant painters developed a regional form of painting under the patronage of the local elite, settling in and around the capital region. This painting style is called 'Patna Kalam' or 'Patna Style'. Patna Kalam Style or Patna School of Painting was one of the schools which was a model of Mughal painting in Bihar from the early 18th to early 20th century.
